Minnesota Power crews reported at 6am today that they have still around 100 customers from the snow event this week and gusty winds. That was over 7500 on Tuesday. Heavy snow and gusty winds brought down trees and power lines and poles, causing scattered outages in Little Falls, Pierz, Swanville to Albany, Cloquet, and the Long Prairie areas. Additional crews were called in Tuesday and worked through the night to help. Travel was difficult in areas, delaying some response times. Outages in some Duluth neighborhoods, including about 1,000 in Lakeside/Lester Park, were reported this morning. About 2,000 customers throughout Minnesota Power’s service area were affected as of 9:30am Wednesday and still many as of this morning. The safety of our crews and customers is our top priority during this outage response. Stay away from any and all downed power lines and do not attempt to remove tree branches that may have fallen on lines. Always assume that downed wires are energized. Please give crews the space they need to work safely along roads and streets and slow down when driving near them. Contact Minnesota Power at (800) 228-4966 to report an outage.
If you were dreaming of a white Thanksgiving, you got your wish. The National Weather Service says many communities across the state have a fresh blanket of snow from the system that swept across the state on Tuesday. Snow totals:Duluth - 10.3" Taft - 9.6" Camp Ripley - 9.5" Moose Lake - 8.3" Deer Creek - 8.0" Randall around 7.5" Baxter - 7.3" Long Prairie - 7.2" Hermantown - 7.1" Little Falls - 7.0" Brainerd - 6.5" Pierz around 6.0", Milaca 6.0" Upsala - 6.0" Chokio - 6.0" St. Cloud - 4.8" and lesser amounts south of St. Cloud. Another big weather factor during the Tuesday storm was the wind. The National Weather Service says St. Cloud had a peak wind gust of 44 miles an hour. Wind gusts over 50 miles an hour were reported in several communities in southwestern Minnesota, including a 56-mile-an-hour gust in Tracy at 8:00 p.m. Thanksgiving Day looks quiet but cold, with another chance for accumulating snow arriving late on Friday into Saturday. Where most is forecast to be 4-6 inches south of the Twin Cities Metro Area.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Monticello on Tuesday night. According to a press release from the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, just before 9:00, someone called 911 and reported a man with a large knife was in the street yelling. Deputies arrived and found the man walking in the 900 block of Golf Course Road. He ignored commands to drop his weapon and started walking toward the deputies. One of them deployed their taser, but the man kept advancing. Another deputy shot him. The man’s injuries are not life-threatening, and he was taken to North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale for treatment, where he is in stable condition. None of the officers involved were injured, and they have been placed on leave, which the press release says is standard procedure. Body worn cameras were on and in use at the time.
There are many bars, restaurants or establishments that have Thanksgiving meals you can call them for information. Most fast food places are closed for Thanksgiving. The Community Thanksgiving Meal is Thursday 11am-1pm at the Falls Ballroom, no charge all invited. Also Word of Life in Upsala is hosting a Thanksgiving free meal Thursday 11:30-1:30pm in Upsala.
A shed and a lot of farm equipment have been destroyed in a fire. The Meeker County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in Collinwood Township, near Dassel. The property is owned by 74-year-old Galen Carlson. The shed was filled with a number of pieces of farm equipment, including a semi-tractor and trailer loaded with corn. Cokato Fire, Litchfield Fire, Hutchinson Fire, and Silver Lake Fire helped the Dassel Fire Department put out the flames. The cause is not known and is being investigated by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office.
NATIONAL NEWS: Two West Virginia National Guard members shot Wednesday near the White House are in critical condition in a local hospital, FBI Director Kash Patel said. The shooting appeared to be targeted at the Guard members, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said. It happened at the corner of 17th and H Streets in the northwest quadrant of the city, roughly two blocks northwest of the White House, at around 2:15 p.m. The shooter was detained by other National Guard members who intervened after the suspect started shooting. The suspect is being treated at a local hospital. One National Guard member was shot in the head, according to a person familiar with the details of the incident who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity. President Donald Trump, who is in Florida celebrating Thanksgiving, warned in a statement on social media that the “animal” who shot the guardsmen “will pay a very steep price.” “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!” The Trump administration ordered 500 more National Guard members to Washington following the shooting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday. Hegseth said President Donald Trump asked him to send the Guard members. There are currently 2,188 troops assigned to the joint task force operating in the city, according to the government's latest update.
